About Us

About Us

WX4RLX is the amateur radio club established at the National Weather Service Office in South Charleston West Virginia. At the current time all club members are employees with the National Weather Service, although we do have outside operator volunteers utilize this callsign during SKYWARN activiations. NWS employees are free to use the amateur radio equipment on duty as long as as it doesn't interfere with their duties. They cannot be directed to operate as a condition of employment. As duties allow, we try to check-in to local nets. If you run a net that is accessible via RF from our QTH, or is available on echolink or a digital mode that we haven't already checked in to, feel free to contact me and I can add it to our 'potential check-in' list.

SKYWARN Recognition Day 2025

SKYWARN™ Recognition Day was developed in 1999 by the National Weather Service and the American Radio Relay League. It celebrates the contributions that SKYWARN™ volunteers make to the NWS mission, the protection of life and property. Amateur radio operators comprise a large percentage of the SKYWARN™ volunteers across the country. The Amateur radio operators also provide vital communication between the NWS and emergency management if normal communications become inoperative. WX4RLX will be on the air making as many contacts as possible again this year. If you are interested in volunteering at the office contact John Peck (john.peck@noaa.gov)
